Correction Officer Transfers
The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Correctional Facility is currently accepting applications for Correction Officer Lateral Transfers.
Candidates must:- Be currently employed as a Correction Officer
- Have completed their probationary period with their current agency
Required Documents
Applicants must submit the following:
- Roster Card
(Employee History Information) from your current agency, showing employment history and salary. - Original Test Announcement
From the civil service exam under which you were hired. This can be obtained from your agency’s Personnel or Human Resources office. - 3. Residency Requirement

This part-time position provides an opportunity to continue serving the community while supporting public safety operations throughout Putnam County.

Responsibilities
Special Patrol Officers perform a variety of public safety and security functions, including:
- Provide security at county buildings and public facilities
- Patrol assigned buildings and surrounding grounds
- Maintain order and assist employees and visitors
- Screen visitors and verify identification when required
- Gather and relay information to deputies and other public safety personnel
- Safeguard county property
- Respond to emergencies and provide assistance when needed
- Prepare activity and incident reports
- Utilize technology to provide real-time situational awareness during public safety operations
- Perform other related duties as assigned

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office is actively recruiting Special Patrol Officers interested in becoming FAA-certified drone pilots as part of our Drone as First Responder (DFR) program.
DFR operators assist deputies by deploying drones to provide real-time aerial intelligence during emergency incidents and public safety operations.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must be retired law enforcement professionals as authorized under New York State General Municipal Law §209-v, including:
- Police Officers
- Sheriff’s Deputies
- New York State Police members
- Correction Officers
- Parole Officers
- Probation Officers
Requirements
Applicants must:
- Have retired within the past four (4) years.
- Applicants retired more than one (1) year may be required to successfully complete a psychological evaluation prior to appointment.
- Be a resident of Putnam County or a contiguous New York county (Dutchess, Westchester, Orange, or Rockland).
- List their retirement date on the application.
Special Patrol Officers may not carry a firearm while on duty unless specifically authorized by the appointing authority. When authorized, possession of a valid New York State pistol license is required.
