The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an incident of Criminal Mischief involving the recently restored Sybil Ludington statue in the Town of Carmel.
On July 8, 2026, at approximately 11:40 a.m., the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of Criminal Mischief at the Sybil Ludington statue. Members of the Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Criminal Investigations responded to the scene along with Putnam County employees involved in the statue’s recent restoration. Upon arrival, investigators observed apparent damage to the base of the historic monument, and an investigation was initiated.
The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Criminal Investigations is actively investigating the incident and will pursue all available investigative leads. At this time, it has not been determined whether this incident is related to the recent criminal mischief investigation involving the historic Putnam County Courthouse and the Declaration of Independence replica.
