Sheriff Brian Hess Announces the Following DWI Arrests Over the Weekend

On February 8, 2026, at approximately 2:10 a.m., a deputy assigned to patrol in the Town of Southeast observed a vehicle traveling westbound on Danbury Road swerving within its lane. A traffic stop was conducted, and the operator was identified as Jorge A. Maldonado Zabala, age 23, of Bedford, New York. During the course of the investigation, Maldonado Zabala displayed signs of intoxication and was unable to produce a valid driver’s license. Further investigation revealed that his license was suspended as a result of a prior Driving While Intoxicated incident. Maldonado Zabala was subsequently placed under arrest.

Maldonado Zabala was charged with:

  • Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle in the First Degree (Felony)
  • Driving While Intoxicated (Misdemeanor)
  • Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Blood Alcohol Content of .08% or More (Misdemeanor)
  • Multiple Vehicle and Traffic Law violations

He was arraigned in the Town of Southeast Court and released on his own recognizance.

On February 8, 2026, at approximately 8:55 p.m., deputies responded to the area of Peaceable Hill Road and Stone Ridge Road in the Town of Southeast for a report of a vehicle that had crashed into a snowbank. The operator was identified as Luis A. McRea, age 40, of the Town of Southeast, New York. During the course of the investigation, deputies observed signs of intoxication, and McRea failed standard field sobriety tests. McRea was subsequently placed under arrest and transported to the Putnam County Correctional Facility for processing.

McRea was charged with:

  • Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated – Previous Conviction within Ten Years (Felony)
  • Driving While Intoxicated – Previous Conviction within Ten Years (Felony)Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle in the First Degree (Felony)
  • Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle in the First Degree for committing Aggravated Unlicensed Operation in the Second Degree while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, a Class E felony
  • Multiple Vehicle and Traffic Law violations

McRea was arraigned in the Town of Southeast Court and released on his own recognizance.
