Traffic Stop Leads to Felony Drug Arrest in Southeast

Sheriff Brian Hess announces the arrest of Paul A. Cancellaro, 53, of New Fairfield, CT, for multiple drug charges following a traffic stop investigation.

On March 31, 2026, Deputy Trupia conducted a traffic stop after observing a vehicle with equipment violations and an expired inspection.

During the investigation, Deputies Trupia and O’Connor discovered approximately 54 bags of cocaine and crack cocaine, totaling more than one-half ounce, along with additional controlled substances, concealed on Cancellaro’s person. Deputies also recovered drug paraphernalia consistent with the intent to distribute.

Cancellaro was arrested and charged with:

  • Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 3rd Degree (Intent to Sell) – Class B Felony
  • Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 3rd Degree – Class B Felony
  • Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 7th Degree (2 Counts) – Class A Misdemeanor
  • Criminal Use of Drug Paraphernalia in the 2nd Degree – Class A Misdemeanor
  • Display Forged Certificate Without Inspection – Misdemeanor

Cancellaro was arraigned in the Town of Southeast Court and remanded to the Putnam County Correctional Facility.
