Cheverko formally served as commissioner of correction for the Westchester County Department of Correction. A 32-year veteran, Cheverko rose through the ranks from correction officer to deputy commissioner, becoming commissioner in 2010.
As commissioner, Cheverko was responsible for strategic planning and the operation of the Westchester County Jail including but not limited to inmate programs, specialized units, special housing units and national accreditation. The Westchester County Jail, which is larger than the Putnam County Jail by almost tenfold, has a capacity of 1,800 inmates.
Cheverko has received national and local accreditations and commendations for the Westchester County Jail from the United States Department of Justice, the New York State Commission of Correction, National Commission on Correctional Health Care and the American Correctional Association. Among other goals, Cheverko will work to have the Putnam County Jail nationally accredited.
