Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Charge in Mahopac

Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports the arrest of a Westchester County man on a drug charge in the Hamlet of Mahopac.

On February 22, 2017 at 8:35 a.m., Deputy Sheriff Jonathan Irwin was on patrol in his cruiser on U.S. Route 6 in Mahopac when he spotted a motorist driving a car on which an expired inspection certificate was displayed. The deputy stopped the car and identified the driver as Mr. Michael L. Power, aged 35, of 10 Adair Road in Cortlandt Manor.

During the traffic stop, the deputy discovered that Mr. Power was allegedly in possession of a quantity of OxyContin, for which he did not possess a valid prescription. The deputy arrested Mr. Power and charged him with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Seventh Degree, a class A misdemeanor. He was also cited for the expired inspection infraction.

The defendant was processed at the Sheriff’s Office and then released on his own recognizance pending a future court date in the Town of Carmel Justice Court. If found guilty of the misdemeanor charge, the defendant could face up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.00.
