tbt - Prisoner Escort 1950s

Sometimes back in the day, it was difficult to tell the good guys from the bad guys. In this photo, we have to help you out. The individual in the middle is the bad guy, being escorted from the Putnam County Courthouse by Inv. Curt Rydell on the left and Inv. Robert Steele on the right. (Steele later became the Undersheriff) Sheriff Frank Lyden can be seen in the back (with the white hair) between Steele and the prisoner. Some interesting observations about this photo. Notice that the prisoner is smoking. The cigarette is in his left hand while he is handcuffed to Inv. Steele’s right hand. The prisoner’s right hand is also handcuffed to Inv. Rydell’s left hand. We love the double-breasted suits and the Fedora hat. Also, take notice of the seriousness of the looks on all of the faces of the lawmen compared to the smirk on the face of the prisoner. Again, our policy is not to glorify the crime or the criminal. However, we doubt the prisoner had this same smirk on his face when he was executed in the electric chair at Sing Sing State Prison for his crime. ca 1952. #putnamsheriffny #putnamcountyny #putnamhistory #perpwalk #throwbackthursday
