Rise in Mail Theft-Related Check Fraud

The FBI and the USPS have issued a warning regarding a significant increase in mail theft-related check fraud, with Suspicious Activity Reports nearly doubling from 2021 to 2023.

Fraudsters are exploiting regulations that require banks to quickly make check funds available, allowing them to withdraw stolen money before the fraud is detected. They gain access to checks through various means, including stealing from mailboxes or USPS facilities. Once in possession of the checks, they employ techniques such as check washing or digital manipulation to create counterfeit checks that can go unnoticed for extended periods.

Check fraud has a substantial impact on businesses, consumers, and government entities. It disrupts operations, damages reputations, and causes incorrect fund distributions.

To mitigate the risk of falling victim to these crimes, individuals are advised to:

  • Promptly collect their mail.
  • Use security envelopes.
  • Consider electronic payment methods.
  • Utilize pens with indelible ink for writing checks.
  • Regularly monitor bank statements for discrepancies.

If you experience fraud, it is crucial to report the incident to your bank and file a complaint with the Sheriff's Office at (845) 225-4300. Awareness and proactive measures are essential in combating the rise of check fraud.
