Rest In Peace Sergeant Gurniak

Sgt. Richard Gurniak, 57, of the Brewster Police Department collapsed after finishing his shift this morning. Despite immediate assistance from fellow officers and members of the Putnam Sheriff’s Office, he could not be revived. He passed away at Putnam Hospital due to a heart attack. Sergeant Gurniak was a retired NYPD member who had been with the Brewster force for two years.

Sheriff Kevin J. McConville and the members of the Putnam County Sheriff's Office express their deepest sympathy to his family, friends, and the entire Brewster community, especially the Brewster Police Department. We are profoundly affected by the sudden loss of a dedicated and respected officer. Sgt. Gurniak’s memory will endure through the legacy of his service and the impact he made on those he worked alongside and protected.
