Putnam Deputy Sheriff Assists In Delivery of Baby
Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports that on Wednesday, June 5th, Deputy John Kerwick assisted in the delivery of a healthy baby girl in a motor vehicle.
At about 7:40PM, Sheriff’s Patrols and the Brewster Fire Department Ambulance were dispatched to a 9-1-1 call of a woman experiencing active labor while in a car which was parked along the side of Route 6 and Simpson Road in the Town of Southeast. Deputies Edward Kennedy, John Kerwick and Christopher Irwin arrived at the scene to find the woman in the final stages of labor and saw the baby’s head, commonly known as “crowning. ” Deputy Kerwick, a certified New York State Emergency Medical Technician, who has prior experience in delivering a child, entered the vehicle and assisted in the delivery of the newborn. Shortly thereafter, members of the Brewster Fire Department Ambulance arrived and rendered further assistance to Deputy Kerwick.
Once the infant was delivered, she and her mother were transported by ambulance to Putnam Hospital Center. The father of the newborn child and her new big sister, who were in the vehicle at the time of birth, followed the ambulance to the hospital in their private vehicle.
The latest information obtained indicates that the baby was reportedly named “Francesca. ” Both mother and baby are healthy and resting comfortably.
