"Move Over Law" Enforced In Putnam County

Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith announces that his department will be enforcing the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law Section 1144A (Operation of Vehicles on Approach of Authorized Emergency Vehicles).

On March 9, 2012, Deputy Sheriffs conducted an enforcement detail that focused on this law on Route 9 in Garrison. During a time span of one hour, Deputy Sheriffs issued twenty traffic tickets. Similar details will be conducted throughout the county in the near future.

The “Move Over Law”, which originally went into effect on January 1, 2011, is intended to protect law enforcement officers and emergency workers stopped along roadways while performing their duties.
