Sheriff Kevin J. McConville reports that beginning in February of 2024, members of the Putnam County Sheriff's Office Bureau of Criminal Investigation began an investigation after receiving information that a Town of Carmel resident had images of child sexual abuse material.
Members of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation executed multiple search warrants, with the assistance of the Sheriff's Office electronics storage detection K9 Hannah, and on March 29, 2024, arrested 53-year-old John Towers of Mahopac. He was charged with two counts of Promoting a Sexual Performance by a Child and three counts of Possessing a Sexual Performance by a Child, both felonies and one count of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, a misdemeanor.
He was arraigned in the Town of Carmel Court and remanded to the Putnam County Correctional Facility on $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 bond.
