Gleneida Avenue Fire

October 22, 1974 was a day that changed the landscape of Main Street (Gleneida Avenue) in Carmel forever. A massive fire destroyed and or damaged many businesses, the largest of which was Morettini’s Variety Store. Other businesses were Cappiello’s Jewelers, Carmel Liquor Store, Kurtz’s Newspaper Store, Smalley’s Inn, Amber Waves of Grain, Montgomery Ward and Simpson’s Drug Store. The estimated dollar amount of the damage at the time was $850,000. Can you imagine what that would be today? This fire was fought by over 200 volunteer firefighters while police from the Towns of Kent, Carmel, New York State Police and the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office handled traffic, crowd control and security of the scene. This site is now the current home of the Carmel Diner. Thank you Lt. Anthony Edwards (Retired) for the photos! #throwbackthursday #putnamsheriffny #putnamcountyny #putnamhistory #carmelNY
