Fourteen Hour Stand Off With Armed Barricaded Man Ends Tragically

THIS IS A JOINT NEWS RELEASE BYMAJOR ROBIN H. BENZIGER TROOP K COMMANDER OF THE NEW YORK STATE POLICE AND PUTNAM COUNTY SHERIFF DONALD B. SMITH

At about 9:45PM on December 7, 2013, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint from the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department requesting assistance in attempting to locate an armed emotionally disturbed person. According to police, 47 year-old Mark Reid of Poughkeepsie, New York, armed with a shotgun, threatened suicide while staying at the Countryside Motel, located at 3577 Route 9 in Philipstown.

A sheriff’s deputy responded to the motel and located Mr. Reid who had barricaded himself inside his motel room. The deputy called for assistance, prompting additional members of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, the Putnam County Emergency Response Team, the New York State Police and the State Police Special Operations Response Team.

Responding officers established a safety perimeter around the motel, evacuated other occupants of the establishment and closed Route 9 to ensure public safety.

Throughout the night, crisis negotiators from both the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police, maintained contact with Mr. Reid in an attempt to get him to peacefully surrender himself and his weapon. Negotiations continued today until Mr. Reid died from a self inflicted gun shot wound.

Sheriff Smith expressed sadness in the outcome of this incident. “While I am certainly grateful that neither any law enforcement officer nor member of the public was injured as a result of this incident, it is truly sad that this man was so emotionally distraught that he took his own life. Our condolences go out to his family and friends,” concluded the Sheriff.
