Colorado Man Charged With DWI

Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith announces the arrest of a Colorado man on a charge of DWI.

On February 4, 2014 at 2:13 a.m., Deputy Sheriff Frederick Mark stopped a motorist who had committed a traffic violation on Route 22 in the Town of Southeast. The deputy determined that the driver, identified as Matthew A. Van Berkum, 39, of 1930 South Gilpin Street, Denver, Colorado was intoxicated. The deputy arrested Mr. Van Berkum and charged him with Driving While Intoxicated, a misdemeanor, after the man failed a series of standardized field sobriety tests. The defendant was processed at the Putnam County Correctional Facility and held pending arraignment.

If found guilty of the misdemeanor charge, the defendant could face up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.00.
