Sheriff's Department Warns Citizens About NYSEG Phone Scam

Putnam County Sheriff Robert L. Langley, Jr. advises that citizens should be aware of an NYSEG “Green Dot Money Paks” Phone Scam. Over the past few years, during the summer months, local businesses in Putnam County have received phone calls from phony individuals who claim to be representatives from New York State Electric and Gas. The scammer informs the businesses that they are behind in their electricity bill. The scammer then warns the business that to avoid having their electric service from being shut off, they have to make payment immediately.

The vessel was provided to the Sheriff’s Department by the New York State Department of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, at no cost to Putnam County. The Sheriff’s Department also participates in a New York State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation reimbursement program, which provides funding for all of the Sheriff’s Department’s Marine Patrol operations.

Deputy for a Day

Sheriff Langley with Erie County brothers Matthew and Andrew who is battling brain cancer. The Sheriff presented both with the lapel pins and challenge coins. The Erie County Sheriff’s Department arranged a staged drug bust and called Andrew up asking for him to come in and help them. They did the whole thing as an emergency response take down and cuffed up the “bad guy.” Andrew had been sworn in by Erie County Sheriff Howard as a deputy for the day. Everyone wishes Andrew and his family all the best! #nyssa2018

Carmel PBA Scam Alert

Scam Alert

The Carmel Police has received a complaint of a scam in which the subject(s) are “spoofing” the telephone number of the “Town of Carmel” or “Town of Carmel Police”.

The victim reported that a male caller with a Middle Eastern accent was trying to gather information about cell phone software from the victim and appeared to be calling from a Town of Carmel Official Phone Line. We believe if the scam continued, the scammer would have attempted to gain remote access into the victims phone or computer and extort money from the victim once the device takeover took place. This is a common scam and thankfully our victim recognized the scam right away and did not lose any money or give any personal information. Please warn elderly relatives of potential phone scams. Do not give any information out and when in doubt hang up and call the police directly.
