Bank Robbery in Putnam Lake
Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports that the Putnam County National Bank at 89 Haviland Drive in Putnam Lake was robbed this morning.
At about 11:00 AM today (Friday), a man walked into the bank and announced a holdup. He ordered the two tellers inside to lie down on the floor, and they complied. The man then walked around the tellers’ counter and took an undisclosed amount of currency from the tellers’ cash drawers. The suspect then fled the bank on foot before a bank employee was able to trip an alarm and call police.
The robber did not display a weapon nor did he threaten the use of one during the crime. No one was hurt in the robbery.
The suspect was described as a white male, in his 40s, about 5’11” tall, weighing about 180 pounds, and having a medium build. He was last seen wearing a gray army-style jacket over a gray hoodie-type sweatshirt, a brownish colored woolen watch cap, and sunglasses with silver rims.
Sheriff’s deputies and investigators were joined in a search for the suspect by state troopers and a state police helicopter. Canine units from the Sheriff’s Office and the MTA Police scoured the vicinity of the bank in an effort to track the suspect. The FBI was notified and is assisting the Sheriff’s Office in the investigation.
As of the time of this News Release, the search for the robber was still in progress. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at (845) 225-4300. All calls will be confidential.
